About Palabora Mining
Palabora has been established in 1956 and is South Africa’s only producer of refined copper. Palabora is listed in the JSE producing about 60,000 tonnes of refined copper per year. The company’s origin comes from the formation known as the Phalaborwa Complex which hosts minerals such as copper, carbonitites as well as other minerals such as phosphates, vermiculite, phlogopite, magnetite, nickel, gold, silver, platinum and palladium also occur.
Palabora Mining operations include underground mine, concentrator, smelter, refinery and vermiculite operations. It has a wide range of products primarily copper with its by-products as well as anode slimes, sulphuric acid, magnetite, nickel sulphate and vermiculite. The company has also a laboratory that offers services such as sample development, routine analysis, fire assay, quality assurance systems and research and development.
Palabora Mining Bursaries
Bursaries will be awarded to students within pursuing mining-related degrees such as Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering and Science.
This bursary will cover tuition fees, accommodation costs and personal allowance of R5000 for University candidates and R4000 for Technikon candidates. Grantees are required to perform vacation work during university holidays as well as partake in a service contract with Palabora Mining.
Bursaries are renewable every year which will depend on the bursary holder’s academic performance.
Palabora Mining Bursary Requirements and Eligibility
- South African citizen
- Matric qualification
- Grade 12 level of education
- Minimum “C” symbol rating for Science and Mathematics
- Studying mining-related fields
- Students in accredited institutions in South Africa
