About Maize Trust Bursary

The Maize Trust was created in August 1998 to serve the South African grain industry. It was formed after the closure of the Maize Board, acquiring the remaining assets of that Board. The Trust provides financial support for institutions and organisations with programmes that focuses on market and production related research. Another objective of the Trust is the acquisition, adaptation and distribution of market information for the local maize industry.

Maize Trust Bursaries

Maize Trust invites students to apply for bursaries to further their studies for postgraduate qualifications.

Maize Trust bursary is valued at R78 334 per year for MSc students and R94 817 per year for PhD students. Bursary recipients will be required to work in the South African maize industry for a period equivalent to the bursary awarded.

The following study fields are required for the Maize Trust bursary:

  • Plant breeding
  • Plant physiology
  • Biometry
  • Agronomy (particularly important)
  • Weed science
  • Soil science
  • Soil microbiology
  • Food sciences (relevant to the crop industry)
  • Plant entomology
  • Plant nematology
  • Plant pathology
  • Molecular biology
  • Plant biochemistry
  • Agricultural economics
  • Agricultural engineering
  • Livestock sciences
  • Pasture sciences
  • Agricultural meteorology

Bursary Requirements and Eligibility

  • South African citizens
  • Full time students of Masters and Doctoral studies towards qualifications mentioned above
  • Maize Trust approved thesis topic
  • Maize Trust and university approved mentor for the study programme
